Shop Foreman (TT Mechanic Lead): Northlake, IL

Due to our recent growth, we are recruiting for an experienced, knowledgeable, hard-working, and customer-focused Shop Forman to join us our team.

The individual will be responsible for basic Tractor and Trailer and oversight of repairs and other mechanics to include but not limited to:

  • Brakes
  • Tires
  • Doors
  • Bodywork
  • Troubleshooting mechanical issues on Roll and Swing door trailers
  • Mechanical on tractors, including Services, Diagnostics, DOT Inspections

The Forman is responsible for overseeing the repair shop operations at both the Chicago and Highland Terminals. This role involves supervising a team of mechanics, delegating tasks, ensuring the timely and efficient repair of tractor-trailers, and maintaining a safe working environment. The Shop Supervisor reports directly to the Director of Fleet.

Responsibilities:

Supervision and Leadership:

  • Lead and manage a team of mechanics, providing guidance, support, and mentorship.
  • Delegate tasks effectively, ensuring the workload is distributed evenly and completed on time.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to communicate expectations, updates, and feedback.

Repair Shop Operations:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the repair shop at both the Chicago and Highland Terminals.
  • Schedule and prioritize repair jobs based on urgency and workload, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Ensure all repairs are completed to the highest quality standards and within specified timeframes.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure necessary parts and equipment.

Mechanical Expertise:

  • Provide technical guidance and support to mechanics, particularly on complex repair tasks.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and develop effective solutions.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices and technological advancements in tractor-trailer repair.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Maintain a safe working environment for all staff by enforcing safety protocols and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, including OSHA and DOT requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and address any potential hazards promptly.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of repair activities, including work orders, parts usage, and maintenance schedules.
  • Generate reports on repair shop performance, including productivity metrics, downtime, and quality control.
  • Provide regular updates to management on operational status and any issues requiring attention.

Training and Development:

  • Identify training needs within the team and coordinate relevant training programs.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and skill development among mechanics.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members.

To be considered the candidate must have:

  • Minimum of one (1) year hands-on tractor/trailer repair experience
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience as a Diesel Mechanic
  • Minimum of three (3) year supervisory experience
  • Possess own general tools
  • CDL Class A, preferred but not required.
  • Air Brake Certification
  • Ability to lead a team

Work schedule:

  • Monday through Friday
